Six Sigma Certification at TU Dortmund University
The Certificate Program
Since 2014, the Department of Statistics, in cooperation with the Institute of Production Systems and the company mts Consulting Partner, has been offering students at TU Dortmund University the opportunity to qualify as a Six Sigma Green Belt.
Six Sigma is a systematic method for process improvement. The special feature of the Six Sigma method is its mathematical approach: the central element of process optimization are statistical methods which can be used for measuring, analyzing, monitoring and improving defined business processes.
The certificate program is primarily aimed at TU Dortmund University students. In the past, these have come from the departments of statistics, mechanical engineering, bioengineering and chemical engineering, but students from other disciplines as well as students from the Ruhr University Bochum or the University of Duisburg-Essen can also complete the program. Participation is also possible as part of a corresponding doctorate.
After successfully completing the program, participants can prove that they are able to carry out a Six Sigma project independently. They gain practical experience, make valuable contacts and increase their attractiveness on the job market with the certificate.
Program Procedure
Green Belt certification is a two-stage process. First, students attend the lecture "Six-Sigma-Methode" or "Einführung in Six Sigma" in the summer semester (both taught in German by the Chair Mathematical Statistics and Applications in Industry). Here, students are taught the necessary theoretical foundations of the Six Sigma concept. An examination at the end of the semester proves that the participants have acquired the skills. This is credited as the Six Sigma Green Belt theory part. More information about the lecture "Six-Sigma-Methode" can be obtained from our teaching page.
After passing this exam, students can carry out a real project in one of the participating companies in the following winter semester, whereby a wide variety of projects and sectors are represented. Topics for these projects can be, for example, the optimization of delivery punctuality or the improvement of process quality in electronics production.
During the implementation of the projects, the participants are continuously supervised by our lecturer Prof. Dr. Stemann. He has many years of experience and supports the successful implementation of the projects. Due to the close supervision, only a limited number of participants are possible and a very good examination performance is required.
After final completion of the project and presentation of the results, the Green Belt certificate is awarded.
