Congratulations. Elena Stäger, master student of our chair, was awarded the Young Scientists Award 2022 in the category "Master's/Bachelor's Theses" by the Federal Statistical Office for her master thesis "Neural Networks in Construction Statistics - Automated Recognition of Construction Sites Based on Aerial Photographs".

In her thesis, which Elena Stäger wrote under the guidance of Johannes Rohde (Statistical Office of North Rhine-Westphalia) and Markus Pauly (TU Dortmund University, Faculty of Statistics), she investigates whether it is possible to reliably extract specific information about construction activities in North Rhine-Westphalia from aerial photographs using artificial intelligence methods in order to support the compilation of construction statistics or to detect illegal construction sites.

The prize will be awarded to Elena Stäger on the occasion of the 31st Scientific Colloquium, which will be organized by the Federal Statistical Office together with the German Statistical Society in Wiesbaden on November 17 and 18, 2022. In addition to the prize money, the award is also associated with a publication in the journal "WISTA - Economy and Statistics." The issue will be published in the course of next year.
