Prof. Thomas Alexander Gerds visited our Chair as part of the tu.hosts program and gave a guest lecture on Causal Inference in Continuous time.

From June 8-11 2026, Prof. Thomas Alexander Gerds, Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Copenhagen, visited our doctoral researcher Maria Thurow at TU Dortmund University as part of the tu.hosts program of the Graduate Center.

During his visit, Prof. Gerds gave a guest lecture titled Causal Inference in Continuous Time. In his talk, he discussed challenges that may arise in the statistical analysis of clinical data, particularly when treatments and covariates evolve over time. Besides theoretical foundations, he also presented examples from collaborative research with partners from medicine, where similar questions often arise.

The visit also provided the opportunity for intensive work on joint research, including a joint project in which the methodologies presented in the talk are applied.

Prof. Gerds' research is particularly about the Theory and applications of statistical methods for time-to-event data and causal inference. Many of his publications are the result of interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers from medicine. We were very pleased to welcome Prof. Gerds to our chair and look forward to continuing our collaboration.
